Bafflingly, my new job does not offer direct deposit. Everybody gets paid with a paper check. Since my credit union is so far away and their hours are severely limited (thanks Covid!) I've been cashing checks at Chase, since they are the bank that issues them. They charge EIGHT BUCKS to cash a check. To a geezer like me, that is offensive in two ways. First, that is a lot of money to me. Second, IT'S THEIR CHECK. There is no middle party. There should be no fee involved IMO.
