Great meetings, nice shop and really great people. They have so many cool aa medallions and books. Great local clubhouse if you're looking for a meeting, they have a multiple each day!
If you are considering Hole in the Sky for your community service hours, I advise looking elsewhere. This isn't due to the place itself, but rather to the management, specifically a man named Davani and one of the "Preachers" leading the AAA/Bible study meetings. First, Davani is an alcoholic. You can smell the alcohol on his breath whenever he speaks to you. If you decide to do community service here, part of your tasks will include recycling -- crushing cans and plastic to make room for recyclables. However, you'll also find yourself recycling the liquor bottles he pulls out of his trunk every few days. It's strange considering this is also an AAA meeting location. Second, unless you share Davani's ethnicity or speak his first language, or a woman, he treats you poorly. He once kicked me in the leg, saying "let's go" to show me a task. While that might be acceptable behavior with his grandchildren, I don't think it's appropriate for adults. When I confronted him about it, he dismissed my concerns and talked down to me. No matter how many times I asked him to treat me with respect, he continued to belittle me, looking at me as if I were overreacting. Additionally, Davani will ask you to run errands or buy supplies, snacks, etc., in exchange for service hours. This might sound reasonable, but the more money you spend on items like snacks or coffee, the fewer hours you receive in return. For example, he'll give you one hour of credit for every $5 spent, while allowing others in his circle to bring in much smaller items and receive far more hours. The unfairness is glaring. Lastly, there's another individual who is the AAA leader and a preacher at the church (guy with the voice box) During one of our tasks, I noticed him looking at pedo content on his phone while in the chapel, despite being across from a lady who was reading her Bible. I was shocked to see what he was viewing, especially in that environment. It's one thing to have gay preferences, but what he was doing was crossing a disturbing line by looking at child (male) porn. Feeling disgusted by the situation, I decided to leave early. When Davani asked why, I informed him about the preacher's pedo behavior. His response? "Ok, what do you want me to do about it?" It's baffling how someone can act like a boss with an attitude but become powerless when confronted with a serious concern. This place needs to reconsider its leadership. The behavior I witnessed from both Davani and the preacher is unacceptable in a community service environment. I plan to contact CRCS to file a complaint. Community service should be about helping others, not dealing with such appalling attitudes and actions.
This is a good local place to go. Has multiple meetings everyday. The Friday meetings are great. They have some candle lit meetings on weekend evenings. Good people, mixed crowd all types but good people. Decent street parking and behind and in neighborhood. Good food across street at Follow Your Heart veg cafe, Henri's 80s diner or Pho 21 if it's open before or after the meet and lots of solid thrift shops near by too. Good alternative to all the Vice bar hang out spots around. Good people, good volunteers manage this spot. They have a self serve donation coffee and tea cafe and a little store attached to the meeting area. I would suggest it for west valley people esp. since it's exclusively dedicated to this cause of helping people find support and sober times. It's got a welcoming homey feel.
