I love Marty and his haircuts. I went for a while to a "stylist" who charged $95 a cut (more than $100 when you add the tip). Marty charges $25 for a cut and he does an excellent job. So basically I pay somewhere between 25 and 30 percent for a Marty haircut, and am at least as satisfied as I was with Mr. "Stylist." Very chill atmosphere, and you only talk as much as you want to.

Great haircut, big props to Marty for knowing how to manage otherwise difficult hair. His handedness was unmatched compared to any previous experience I've had.. Not to be cheesy, but it felt sort of artistic how we went about cutting with this sort of hovering, painterly hand. Not much talking with him, but that was fine by me. Ambiance is pretty barbershop-standard; there are some antique hair products on the shelves by the entrance which are cool to check out tho. Wait time here, when I went by (Thursday afternoon), was negligible, and obviously much more manageable than temescal alley. I'd come back again, altho I do have yet to snag a cut elsewhere to compare.

Torn between four and five stars. It's not a mind-blowing experience, but that's sort of the point in a place like this. If indeed you're looking for a place to show up, get a cut, and not feel overly powdered and produced afterward, Rockridge Barber Shop is a good pick.
